Occupational health and safety is considered the backbone of healthy companies - and yet its implementation remains a challenge in the day-to-day operations of many small and medium-sized companies. A lack of time, limited human resources and increasing demands make it difficult to keep an eye on all processes. This is precisely where a new research project, which has now been launched by Deep Care together with the BG prevent GmbH and the August Wilhelm Scheer Institute was launched: AMADEUS.
An excerpt from the project name already reveals the direction: "Agentic AI for occupational safety in SMEs" - a research initiative funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)which aims to make occupational health and safety management systems more intelligent, efficient and practicable.
According to the IGA report, only just under half of employees in Germany are regularly instructed in occupational health and safety. This is despite the fact that the legal requirements are clearly regulated. The reason is rarely a lack of will, but simply a lack of time. Small and medium-sized companies struggle to maintain documentation, keep risk assessments up to date and keep track of legal requirements.
The stakes are high: in 2023, production losses due to illness amounted to 118 billion euros - a figure that not only hurts the economy, but is also very tangible in many companies.
In practice, you see it again and again: paper folders full of risk assessments, scattered Excel lists and a multitude of administrative tasks. AMADEUS wants to fundamentally change this situation - not with bureaucracy, but with intelligence.
AMADEUS uses a specially trained knowledge system that speaks the language of occupational health and safety. It recognises which risks are typical for an activity, which protective measures are effective and how reports must be correctly documented. In short: it thinks professionally.
You can think of AMADEUS as a team of digital colleagues. One reads guidelines, another creates reports, the next checks instruction statuses - everyone works in parallel, exchanges information and complements each other. This creates a fluid workflow that takes over many routine tasks and noticeably relieves the workload on specialised staff.
AMADEUS processes all information locally within the company - no cloud server, no external data outflows. Personal information is automatically anonymised and every system action remains transparently traceable. The project therefore already fulfils the requirements of the new EU AI Act and the GDPR - and shows that digitalisation and data protection do not have to be mutually exclusive.
The project will ultimately be implemented in several pilot companies and developed in close cooperation with occupational safety specialists. Their experience flows directly into the design - so that in the end AMADEUS not only impresses technically, but really works in everyday life.
With AMADEUS, Deep Care is consistently expanding its research - and building on proven developments. Already with the AI-based healthcare assistant Isa Deep Care has shown how technology can measurably improve health behaviour in the workplace.
In Studies by the Technical University of Munich and Heidelberg University Hospital It has been scientifically proven that Isa: reduces musculoskeletal complaints by over 50 %, significantly increases productivity and well-being and permanently establishes health-promoting routines in everyday office life.
These findings form the basis for the next step: the transfer of AI logic from individual behaviour to organisational structures in occupational health and safety.
In close cooperation with BG prevent, a new generation of digital prevention systems is being created. While Isa focuses on personal behaviour, the concept developed together with BG prevent aims to Risk Assessment to support specialists with risk assessments.
AMADEUS takes these developments to a new level and expands them with a dynamic, adaptive system that monitors, evaluates and documents occupational health and safety processes in real time.
This is how we close the circle: from individual health promotion and AI-supported risk detection to systematic, data-based occupational health and safety for companies.
AMADEUS is not an end in itself, but a socially relevant goal: to make occupational health and safety so simple, effective and self-evident that it is no longer an obstacle. After all, prevention is not just a legal obligation - it is a question of corporate culture. When occupational health and safety functions smoothly, there is more time for what really matters: healthy employees, safe processes and sustainable value creation.
"With AMADEUS, we are bringing artificial intelligence to where it creates real added value - in the daily work of people who bear responsibility for health." says Dr Milad Geravand, Managing Director of Deep Care and project coordinator.
The project will run for 30 months and is being funded as part of the BMBF funding programme "KMU-innovativ: Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie (IKT) - Gesundheit und Medizintechnik".
AMADEUS represents the next evolutionary step in occupational health and safety - a system that supports rather than replaces. It brings structure to complex requirements, saves time, creates transparency and ultimately strengthens what makes the difference: people who take responsibility - and technologies that take the pressure off them.
